After being caught as a stray, this senior Great Pyrenees mixed breed dog, found himself at Indianapolis Animal Care Services. He arrived on May 25, 2019. GSD Rescue Indy rescued him on June 11, 2019 as an unclaimed stray. Normally the rescue reserves kennel space for German Shepherd Dogs however it has a soft side for senior dogs. Kennel staff mentioned that he was wandering in the neighborhood of Irvington (Indianapolis) where he was finally caught.
Ghost was adopted to a former and current adopter. The adopter has only adopted senior dogs with medical issues. Ghost was perfect for her senior dog home and its spacious landscape of trees and green grass. Unbeknownst to the rescue or the adopter, Ghost had a long history of escaping his home and yard. It wasn't long that the adopter noticed that Ghost was focused on fleeing even after having a soft bed, couch and nutritious food.
The worst nightmare happened. Ghost exited the adopter's home through a dog door and once outside, jumped a 5' wooden fence. Ghost was gone for over 10 days until he was once again apprehended and then taken back to Indianapolis Animal Care Services. Ghost was picked up and a GPS collar was purchased along with modifications to the existing fence.
As most people have to travel occasionally for their careers, the adopter had to plan for her next business trip. Having lost Ghost once, she hired a dog-sitter, leaving her detailed instructions on Ghost. The instructions were ignored and Ghost escaped once again. Ghost fled July 14, 2019 and is still missing.
The most amazing part of this story is that Ghost traveled from the Columbus, Indiana area all the way to Indianapolis, Indiana both times! It is approximately a 45 mile journey one way. His story has garnered a large following of fans.
Social media has sadly distorted facts about him and his former owner. Ghost has SOME hearing loss however is able to hear. Ghost is NOT blind. Ghost has heart worm disease. Upon a veterinarian examination, it appears Ghost is between 9-10 years of age.
IF YOU SEE GHOST, PLEASE DO NOT CHASE OR APPROACH.
